Why We Love The Paranormal

Only a generation ago, the paranormal subgenre of romance was almost unheard of.  Nowadays, it’s one of the most thriving.  Vampires, warlocks, witches, ghosts, demons, and succubi, to name just a few, are all the rage and getting sexier with every passing year.  There’s no doubt readers love the paranormal.

Something about characters who come across as “the other” is fascinating to people.  The idea that a paranormal creature could be so different yet so appealing is one of the draws to the paranormal.  Authors have made the ultimate undead creature, the vampire, so sexy that it’s difficult to remember that not so long ago he was a hideous being destined to be unloved.  And ghosts? All they had was the dread of the living to deal with years ago, but now they’ve joined the ranks of the attractive paranormal character. Even demons have become sexy and desirable.  But why?

I suspect it’s because what happens after this life is very intriguing to many people.  In a world where we can have the answers to almost everything we’d like with just a few clicks, the question of what comes after this is still unanswerable.  The idea that we don’t have to leave this Earth and all we’ve come to love about it when we die sounds like the best of both worlds for some.  And the chance for eternal life and youth?  These are the things people dream of.

It’s not only that the paranormal deals with the afterlife, though.  It also touches on all that has been taboo for centuries.  Witches, warlocks, and demons were seen as consorts of the devil at one time.  Now they are fodder for sexy romance because they represent the forbidden.  Inherent in that idea of the forbidden is danger, and if anything sells a reader on the paranormal, it’s the danger that exists in the characters.

As an author, I find the paranormal subgenre offers me the opportunity to create all kinds of interesting characters and plots. I’ve written about my own paranormal creations, Aeveren in my Destined Ones series, in addition to Sidhe and witches, but I must admit that my favorite remains the vampire.  For me, the vampire possesses all that made me fall in love with the paranormal romances years ago.  My most recent release, Blood Avenged, stars a 400 year old vampire named Vasilije, a hedonist who enjoys the world more as a vampire than he ever did as a human.  To him, the question isn’t why would someone want to be a vampire but why wouldn’t they?  Eternal youth, power beyond what humans can even dream of, and the promise of life eternal, as long as hunters and those of his own kind don’t get him, sound much better than anything mere mortals can hope to have.

I have to admit.  I think Vasilije might be onto something there.

Thanks for having me here at Paranormal Freebies today. Leave a comment to be entered for a chance to win a copy of my newest paranormal release, Blood Avenged. Here’s the blurb for a little taste:

I am everything you desire.  I am vampire.

Powerful and manipulative, Vasilije does as he pleases. A vampire beholden to no one, he takes what he desires, drinking deeply the pleasures this life has to offer.

When one of his own is staked, Vasilije must travel toNew Orleans to exact his revenge. There he meets Sasa, a beautiful woman who arouses him like no other has for centuries. Vasilije’s need for vengeance is equaled only by his passion for her, but what he finds in his revenge is just the beginning…

  1. Vasilije sounds a lot like my vampire character Damon la Croix. Damon is vampire, hear him roar…undead and loving it. His main problem is that he meets too many women who are his match and manages to lose every one of them.

Sounds like a good series, Gabrielle!

Blood Avenged sounds like a great read. You must be very good at making readers love your characters if you can get away with a vampire that hedonistic. My vampire character would like to be the ultimate hedonist, but I’ve been told he is too arrogant. So, I’m trying to rein him in a bit. Wishing you many sales!

  3. Thanks for having me here today!

This is such an awesome post and I agree wholeheartedly!
There is just something about the taboo, and the whole take on these unimaginable beings has changed in so many ways! They’ve become sexy and romantic :) we all love a bad boy, so I think the basis of vampires etc. being evil takes that fantasy to an entire new level!
    Thanks, Gabrielle!

  5. Vasilije sounds like one of those characters that you love to hate. He has an attitude but once he meets his lady love, he makes you a fan. Thanks for a great post. I look forward to reading.

  6. Hi Tony-Paul! I loved writing a character whose attitude was, “This is who I am. Deal.” It was great fun. Thanks for stopping by and commenting. :)

Hi Bianca! There’s just something about Vasilije that appeals to readers. I have to admit, I’ve written another character, Amon, in my books Stolen Destiny and Destiny Redeemed, who while not as sexually hedonistic is absolutely as unapologetic about who he is and the power he wields. You know what? He’s always a favorite of readers, even though I worried he was too much. I love characters like that, though. Some characters shouldn’t be reined in. Maybe yours is just meant to be arrogant. Nothing wrong with a man who knows what he wants and takes it. :) Thanks for commenting!

Hi Roxanne! Happy to meet another vampire/bad boy fan! Thanks for commenting!

  7. Tracey D says:

I enjoyed the post; it was a great read. I look forward in meeting Vasilije and the other characters. I love this line.. “I am everything you desire. I am vampire.”

  8. Tonya says:

This sounds like a enticing read!!! Vasilije sounds HOT!!! Luv me some vamps!!! Can’t wait to read this book!!! Thanks for the chance to win!! :-)

  9. Thanks Tracey and Tonya! Vasilije’s story was so much fun to write. :) He makes it so easy.

  10. Hi Lynn! Thanks for commenting. Vasilije’s the type of character who can drain someone one minute and make love to a woman the next. That bad boy thing appeals, it seems. :)

  11. shah wharton says:

I adored the bad boys in fiction, and they couldn’t get much darker than a being who could seduce you or kill you with eye contact or a delicious kiss. I adore Damon from Vampire Diaries for his lazy arrogance and easy immorality. Its fantasy after all. I couldn’t handle that in my real life (I tried all through my teens and twenties :P ) – but in the imagination its entirely possible to believe you’re the heroine who tames the very very bad man – just a little. :) And that’s soooo addictive. I think that’s why this genre is growing in popularity for authors and for readers. They’re a shot of word-adrenaline, scorching through our veins, searching out the buttons to press and finding every one :) X

  12. Jessica Aspen says:

Thanks for coming by Gabrielle! Your book sounds fantastic and we’ll look forward to hearing from you when you have your next one out. Or maybe sooner?

  13. Thanks for stopping by Shah! The bad boy works so well in fiction, but not so often in real life. Oddly enough, although I write in the genre, I’ve never seen Vampire Diaries. Damon sounds yummy, though. ;)

And thank you so much, Jessica, for having me here at your wonderful blog. My next book, Blood Betrayed, is scheduled for a late spring/early summer release and it’s a sequel to Blood Avenged, so I’d definitely like to be back here where you celebrate all that’s paranormal. :)
